ARRL announces leadership changes in central division

ARRL Central Division Director Kermit Carlson, W9XA, has stepped down as Central Division Director. Carlson made the announcement at the July 2021 board meeting last weekend. Vice Director Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA, took over as Director Chair, and ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR, appointed Brent Walls, N9BA, to succeed Luetzelschwab as Vice Director of the Division central. A life member of ARRL, Walls served as Section Chief for Indiana from 2016 to 2018. Active with ARES, he is a former Section Emergency Coordinator for ARRL in Indiana and was also an emergency coordinator for Marion County, Indiana. He is a volunteer ARRL VEC examiner.

Carlson was both assistant manager and then head of the central division for a total of 12 years. He said his resignation was the result of an “intractable conflict” between the board of directors and family obligations that would impact his travel on behalf of the ARRL. “It would be impossible to maintain the level of in-person engagement with the members that I consider essential,” said Carlson.

Carlson said his “most challenging and rewarding experiences” include 11 years as chair of the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) committee and his recently completed term as chair of the ARRL CEO search committee. . He will continue to chair the EMC.
