ClearWELL enters the geothermal market | world energy

Aberdeen-based ClearWELL first entered the geothermal energy market to meet growing cross-industry demand for its chemical-free electromagnetic scale control technology.

After building a successful oil and gas business, ClearWELL is experiencing increased interest from the geothermal industry, leading the company to undertake its first such project. In February 2022, ClearWELL’s scale control technology was installed for a large utility company at a geothermal power plant in Germany. The geothermal well at this facility had been severely impacted by calcium carbonate scaling on the well casing, electric submersible pump, surface heat exchangers and filter systems, leading to pump failures and reduced efficiency. . ClearWELL technology will protect this system from further scale buildup and its performance will be monitored remotely via satellite link.

Keith Coutts, CEO of ClearWELL, said, “Entering the renewable energy market presents an exciting opportunity for business growth, with around 400 suitable geothermal and thermal installations that we could support in Europe alone. Applying our skills and technology here will improve geothermal efficiency for asset owners, but also provide our business with a balanced energy portfolio and the opportunity to improve our carbon offset. The European renewable energy market is an ideal springboard for our global growth ambition.

“ClearWELL technology is ideally suited for geothermal applications because variations in temperature, pressure, flow and liquid state are common and act as key contributors to scale formation. The use of chemical treatments is often prohibited in this industry, so with its green credentials, ClearWELL is a valuable throughput insurance solution.

The technology uses a low frequency electromagnetic signal to inhibit the formation of mineral scale in wet systems such as wells. It also protects expensive internal components against failure, such as pumps and valves. This green technology can replace traditional approaches such as continuous injection of bulk chemical inhibitors, acid washes and mechanical milling intervention.
