The issue made headlines after US diplomats and spies in Havana experienced puzzling symptoms of brain damage in 2016 – such as dizziness, headaches and memory loss. The government calls this mysterious syndrome “health incidents”. And now…Newsy has exclusive details that FBI agents are also reporting these symptoms…on US soil.

Mark Zaid is a prominent national security attorney representing current and former FBI personnel. He says a dozen or more incidents have been reported in Washington, DC and Florida, mostly from the bureau’s Miami field office.

“There have been double-digit FBI members, FBI employees, who have been injured in multiple locations across the United States,” Zaid said. “These are cases that have come to the attention of not only the FBI but also the CIA and the DNI and people on the Hill. These have not really been made public in any way. In fact, the reality is that domestic incidents are minimized, if not outright ignored, by the US government.”

Zaid says the incidents mostly happened in the past four years. The common thread he’s seen in victims across multiple agencies is Russia-related work.

“The AHI survey is like an iceberg,” Zaid said. “We only see the top third. Most of it is below the surface. I’ve seen below the surface, but even I’ve only seen a little below the surface.”

This winter, the CIA estimated that most reports were explained by medical or environmental conditions, not by a foreign adversary. But the agency still couldn’t rule out a nation-state in some cases.

The attorney’s requests for FBI records under the Freedom of Information Act have so far come to nothing. A recent letter outlines B7A exemptions, which withhold documents pending a criminal investigation.

When Newsy described the incidents to the FBI, the bureau said the issue was “a top priority” and that “the FBI takes seriously all U.S. government personnel who report symptoms,” including sending a message to its personnel. on how to respond if he experiences an incident and where they can receive medical assessments.

Zaid is also trying to get a 150-page report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which he says they’re suddenly calling a “draft.”

He thinks that the CIA is suspicious of this report made public because it contradicts the agency. It’s closer to a National Academy of Sciences report that finds pulsed electromagnetic energy to be the most plausible cause.
