It’s all in the picture when it comes to cancer prevention

We have more information at our fingertips than ever.

Breast cancer awareness takes center stage this month. But over the years it has come to include all
types of cancer. The Imaging and Radiology Department at Sweetwater County Memorial Hospital is
ready to help you prevent and cure not only cancer, but a wide variety of diseases.

Doctors use medical imaging tests to help detect and diagnose disease. Certain imaging tests such
like mammography, nuclear medicine, computed tomography and x-rays use radiation to image the body while others like
unlike ultrasound and MRI. The different types of imaging tests are not always interchangeable
because they provide different information.

Mammography is useful for detecting breast cancer. Digital mammography captures images that can be
seen on a computer screen. Three-dimensional breast tomosynthesis, a mammography system that creates
a 3D image of the breast, improves the doctor’s ability to detect breast cancer.

The new 3D mammography unit at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County is clinically proven
offers a more comfortable mammogram thanks to its SmartCurve breast stabilization system. The
system delivers an exceptional patient experience without compromising image quality.

Nuclear medicine helps doctors find cancer, see how far it has spread, and how well a
the treatment is working. The process involves a small amount of radioactive material injected into the body
that locates specific cells or tissues – including cancer cells – and binds to them. A special type of
an imaging camera is used to detect the radioactive substance.

MRI: Sweetwater Memorial has the only large diameter magnetic resonance imaging machine in the region.
This MRI provides patients with the greatest comfort of a conventional open-bore system, as well as the high
Quality imaging of the conventional closed-bore system. It also has a table limit of 550 pounds.

The hospital’s large-diameter MRI has expanded the number of patients who can be tested, providing a
less claustrophobic feeling than other systems. Our patients tell us how their
The MHSC experience is at MHSC compared to other MRIs they’ve had.

MRI uses a strong magnet and radio waves linked to a computer to create detailed images of
areas inside the body. The images show the difference between normal and diseased tissue. MRI
creates better images of organs and soft tissues than other scanning techniques such as computed tomography or x-ray.

PET Scan: Positron emission tomography can help doctors find cancer cells in the body. This
uses a small amount of radioactive glucose (sugar) which is injected into a vein; cancer cells often use
more glucose than normal cells. The PET scanner then takes a detailed and computerized image of the areas
inside the body where glucose is used.

TDM: Computed tomography is a special machine that uses x-rays to create a series of
computerized images of areas inside the body taken from different angles. These images reveal
abnormalities of bones and soft tissues, including organs, muscles and tumors. A special material
IV contrast is used for some exams to make the area of the body being imaged easier to see. A
A special CT scan using low dose radiation may be used as a screening tool for some people at high risk of
develop lung cancer.

X-rays are the oldest and most widely used form of imaging in medical imaging. It is about exposing a
area of the body at a small dose of radiation to create a picture of the inside of the body.

Ultrasound is a safe and painless way to visualize the body. It uses high frequency sound wave which is
transmitted by a transducer (probe) placed directly on the skin over the area to
picture. The sound wave bounces off internal tissues or organs and forms echo patterns which are displayed
on the screen of the ultrasound system. Ultrasound images are captured in real time and can show
the structure and movement of the internal organs of the body, as well as the blood circulating in the
blood vessels.

DXA bone mineral study: Our Hologic Discovery DXA machine gives Sweetwater Memorial the
ability to provide high quality bone health assessments by offering two powerful screening tests
that can help our patients live longer, healthier and more active lives.
