Rocket Lab launches satellite built by General Atomics to support the Argos constellation

rocket lab launched a satellite on Friday afternoon to Atomic General Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) to support the Argos constellation, a network of polar-orbiting satellites that collect data about the Earth’s physical and biological environment.

The US space force Space Systems Command awarded the contract to General Atomics in early 2019 behalf The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which collaborates with the French space agency CNES on the constellation of Argos. General Atomics built the GAzelle satellite to accommodate the Argos-4 instrument provided by CNES.

In the mission dubbed “It Argos Up From Here”, an Electron rocket lifted off from Pad B at Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand’s Mahia Peninsula at 1:09 p.m. EDT Friday 6:09 a.m. 8 a.m. local time on the 1st october. . The satellite was deployed approximately 55 minutes into the mission.

Once in orbit, Argos-4 will join a network of other Argos instruments in orbit. Argos is an international program that collects data from thousands of sensors around the world, many of which track wildlife movements and migrations. Argos tracks over 13,000 objects, many of which track ocean wildlife including seals, turtles, dolphins, turtles and more. Data is collected and distributed for ocean buoy tracking and maritime safety, as well as non-environmental uses.
